Dear Colleague,

We would like to invite you to the Second International Congress of European Turks, set to take place on May 14–16, 2009 in Antwerp, Belgium. The theme of this year’s congress is “Education and Integration.

This congress is intended to be a forum, discussion and networking venue for academics, researchers, professionals, administrators, educational leaders, and policy-makers interested in the educational sciences, migration and integration research in the context of Europe and European Turks.

For the last half-century, Turkey has been sending immigrants to various European countries, and today there are nearly 6 million Turks living in Europe. This large, distinctive population has a great influence on bilateral relations between Turkey and European countries. European Turks have become increasingly integrated into their host countries, and many have become permanent residents. Yet Turkish immigrant communities in Europe have to some extent maintained an inward-looking structure. We have seen both difficulties and positive developments in immigrant-related problem areas such as culture preservation, constructive interaction with the host country’s culture, and education. New approaches should be developed based on the results of the integration policies currently being implemented by European governments. In this context, education carries great importance. Social scientists can shed light on the future through common discussion platforms enabling them to develop new, interdisciplinary approaches to immigrant-related issues. Towards this end, the Second International Congress of European Turks will take place on May 14-16, 2009 at Antwerp University in Belgium with the theme “Education and Integration.” It would give us great pleasure to welcome you there.

We would like to invite you to share your expertise, experience, and research results about educational sciences, migration and integration research with your colleagues.

Best regards,

Ismail Aydogan, Ph.D.

Chairman of the Congress
Organization Committee
